Welcome to the Exmoor Society website
Formed in 1958, the Exmoor Society works to protect and enhance the special qualities of the varied, wild and romantic landscapes of Exmoor.
Infinite variety is part of Exmoor's charm for the landscape is a mixture of wide open moorlands, spectacular cliffs, deep wooded coombes and rolling hills.Upland farms are connected to small hamlets and pretty villages by narrow lanes lined with beech hedges. There is a rich variety of wildlife including red deer,Exmoor ponies, rare fritilliary butterflies, bats and moorland birds. It is an historic landscape of how people have lived here since the last ice age. All this is found in a relatively small area of 170,000 acres.
A landscape then that provides inspiration, livelihoods and prosperity for many but remains fragile and vulnerable to incremental change, destroying its unique qualities. Please join us both to help our campaigning work and to enjoy Exmoor.
